A Name with Roots The Childhood Memory (1978) One of Denken’s earliest memories is of having a book read to him about a kingdom in the sea — underneath the water level but open to the sky. In the story, this was made possible by mangroves, or banyan, whose roots interlocked so tightly as to keep out the ocean, even while the entire island was essentially in a large depression made possible by the surrounding wall of trees. “A magical kingdom held together by trees.
